How to Choose the Ideal Pallet: 2-Way or 4-Way, Block or Stringer

By November 17, 2025Sin categoría

Choosing the right type of pallet is no small matter: it directly affects load safety, transport efficiency, handling ease and packaging durability. In a market where logistics margins are increasingly tight, making the right choice can lead to significant savings in time, costs and risks.

At Pallets Castillo, we know this well: not all pallets are suitable for every use. That’s why we manufacture 2-way and 4-way pallets, with block or stringer structures, tailored to the needs of each customer and type of goods. In this article, we explain the differences between both types and help you choose the most suitable one depending on the load, weight and handling requirements.

Types of pallets by entry points: 2-way or 4-way access

2-way pallets

2-way pallets allow forklift or pallet jack forks to enter only from two opposite sides.
This makes them especially robust lengthwise, since the base is usually more continuous and resistant. They are common in industrial sectors where handling is always done from the same direction or with very heavy and stable loads.

Main advantages:

  • Greater structural resistance against deformation

  • Ideal for heavy loads and large-format goods

  • Lower risk of breakage from lateral impact

Limitations:

  • Restricted access (cannot be lifted from all four sides)

  • Less versatile in automated warehouses or narrow aisles

  • May require more manoeuvres for positioning

4-way pallets

4-way pallets allow forklift entry from any side, which greatly facilitates handling and storage in tight spaces or in environments where different types of logistics machinery are used.

Main advantages:

  • Maximum accessibility: can be loaded and unloaded from any position

  • Faster and more flexible loading and unloading operations

  • Compatible with automated systems and industrial racking

  • Improves efficiency in goods rotation

Limitations:

  • Slightly less resistant than a 2-way pallet made from the same material

  • May require a reinforced design for very heavy loads

Construction types: block pallets vs. stringer pallets

In addition to the number of entry points, pallets are also classified according to their bottom structure, which can be block-style or stringer-style. This characteristic determines how weight is distributed, how the load rests, and what type of handling is possible.

Block pallets

Block pallets consist of a top and bottom deck connected by cubic blocks (“blocks”), leaving spaces that allow fork access from all four sides. This is the most widely used design internationally and is often chosen for exports, as it easily complies with ISPM 15 standards when made from treated wood.

Stringer pallets

Stringer pallets (also called “skid pallets”) have three lower stringers that directly support the top boards, forming a more solid and uniform base. This design is widely used for heavy loads and goods that require high stability during transport.

How to choose the right pallet according to the load and handling type

Tips before buying pallets

  • Define the maximum load per pallet. If you exceed 1,000 kg, choose stringer structures or reinforced 2-way pallets.

  • Consider the machinery you will use. If you use manual pallet jacks or need quick access from multiple sides, a 4-way pallet is the best option.

  • Think about the destination. For exports, always request heat treatment and ISPM 15 certification, which is mandatory for international shipments.

  • Assess usage frequency. If the pallet will be reused many times, it’s worth investing in a more robust model (stringer or mixed).

  • Trust specialised manufacturers. Companies like Pallets Castillo can produce custom-made pallets, adjusting dimensions, board thickness, wood type and treatment according to the goods and logistics flow.
